Private investigators are fairly common, yeah. There are just some things you don't want to go to the police for.

Are the police really that incompetent that investigators need to pick up the slack?

Yes.

But some people just don't want legal involvement. Although even with private investigators, depending on what they uncover, they are required by law at a certain point to turn the case over to police.

Ah, but how did you get into such a profession in the first place?

For me? Coincidence, mostly. I just got hired because of my computer skills.

Pardon me for asking, given that I am not one who is knowing of the modern era, but...what do computers have to do with investigating?

You can get a lot of information that way. Most things are online these days, so you can solve a case just by knowing where to look.
