[She's. Startled to see him napping? Anyway, I said circus because of clown shoes; even though the evidence is gone she still wants to think it through. Tea room is the same.]
Oh, agreed. I'm not weeping for the man who thinks people who die when you drill holes in their heads has nothing to do with him. Nor am I weeping for HK-47.
But. . . whoever is actually behind these killings will act again. I'm further beginning to notice a pattern of targeting Despair, alongside the pattern of targeting young men who don't have the physique of a fighter. If more than a coincidence, it ought to concern us both.
[She just called him a twink. . . she doesn't really mean it as an insult, though. She's shorter and scrawnier than he is, after all.]
As am I. [She shrugs - it's obvious just by looking at them anyway.] I do my best to suggest there are things besides the physical that ought to make a killer wary - as, I suppose, do you. [Both running around acting confident and angy.]
But it is only a matter of time before someone picking off the vulnerable decides to call that bluff.
I think that if it comes to that, we need to try to pre-plan ways to make it easier for people to solve our cases. While I'd prefer not to die, if it happens... I don't want to make it easy for my killer to walk free.
I am sworn not to die. If I am dead, then all is lost. I cannot - I cannot make plans based on an outcome that will be the end of everything I have worked for.
[. . .]
I wouldn't see you dead, either. I would not wish to pre-plan for your death.
[ his expression twists into something-- more emotional? conflicted? but it evens out again. ]
That's fair. No one would want to do it. Dying is something I have no intentions of willingly doing. [ ... ] I just don't want to give someone the satisfaction of beating me, in case they do target me.
I was talking to Grace, and she had the suggestion of leaving an unsent message on your phone. But then it's just figuring out something very short to type out that wouldn't be obvious to anyone but maybe two or so people.
[ it has to be more than one, in case that one person also ends up dead. ]
I'm not sure whether you're aware, but there are little pictograms available as well as text. They can be used to represent particular people and concepts.
[Stop. . . explaining emojis. . . ]
I've become a little more adept at using them while texting with Mollymauk.
[ harrow explaining emojis is hilarious, actually, but he's too preoccupied with the current conversation to give it the attention it deserves. ]
So, thinking of an emoji that'll represent everyone. It would be best to come up with that in advance, since thinking about it on the spot might take too long.
And I will give credence to the idea that they cannot be so obvious or else the killer will simply erase them, even though I am of the firm opinion that it would be ridiculous for a killer to leave any message behind, particularly if it is too cryptic to understand.
Hmm. Alternatively, there is the option of a cipher. The one I typically use would be too complex to teach someone else to decode in such a short time, but it could be modified. Though - it makes me wonder if that's what Grace meant all along. Luca was a mathematician, was he not?
Oh, I agree. So I think my priority would be to at least get enough space away from the killer that whoever it is, they wouldn't notice me leaving the message. They can't erase something they're not aware exists. It's why the phone would be the easiest option. I think I'd be faster at typing than most people here.
[ sometimes your job involves typing things on all kinds of tech a lot so you are very good at it.
although at the cipher idea... ]
... maybe. We still know what the message was, so we can try to see if we can crack it. But in general, thinking of something like that for our use could be useful.
Here is what I would propose. Simple, but indecipherable to anyone you didn't tell. Choose one of the categories of little pictures - animals, or food items, or what have you - and simply assign them alphabetically or at random, and then share the list with one or two persons to memorize. No one else will think to consider that a dog was Aoi or a banana Ashiya Douman.
[Plus it would be really funny at trial if Sasazuka was murdered and his phone was just a row of eggplants.]
I've been putting a lot of thought into current circumstances. I am tired of being merely reactive, and remaining two steps behind. I would like to put more thought in how to proactively deter killers, or make them easier to catch.

Any mark on their body will be lost to the healing pods. But any message has the possibility of being lost to surprise.

Good. And I suppose so long as you know it, I can keep it as an option for myself.

Right. Preferably this will all be for nothing, but having a backup plan will never hurt.
