It depends on what the things are and the context.

It's possible. You can even become addicted to them-- some people have died from overplaying because they forget to take care of themselves.

But I wouldn't say I actually fall under that category, unless I decide to use it as a way to indulge for points here.

It's surprisingly common. People end up throwing away their lives for whatever their fix is, even when it's something most people wouldn't see as a drug.

... Obsessions aren't impossible where I'm from, but who has the time to devote their whole lives to something like that? There's too much going on.

But people can be strange with what they fixate on.

I don't think it's only a modern problem, but it has definitely gotten worse with it. It'll probably continue to get worse, too.
