I spoke to Greed. After explaining why I wanted to know the number of people voting in trials, he gave me an ability that'll let me do exactly that.

I can't use it on previous trials, only ones as they happen. And like the other abilities, it'll be gone after two weeks.

Did you have to do anything before that?

[ honestly? he's fuckin' amazed himself. ]

I expect if they'd thought my reasoning wasn't useful, or was just for curiosity's sake or messing around they'd have shot me down.

Are you going to use it for the next trial?

... Did you have to jump through hoops for something?

But yes. That's the plan, unless you can think of a reason not to.

No, I think that's fine.

[ he ignores the first question ]

I'll take that as a yes then.

... Of course, if we catch the right person this time it'll all be null and void, but that's the risk for the reward. I'd rather it turned out like that than the opposite.

[dotcom]

It's better to have some sort of backup plan, so we can see if this gets us anywhere if you do end up using it.

[aubins]

I think I just have to use it during the trial at any point, so I could see if we have any suspects in mind before I choose to use it.

If we clearly know who it is, then logically more people are going to vote for them. But it could be interesting to see who doesn't.

[ he nods. ]

I'm sure we might get some spite votes as well.

Potentially, yeah. But I think we've been getting those anyway.

[dotcom]

Oh, yeah. All of the Vlad ones.

[aubins]

Exactly. And now I have to wonder who their next spite target will be, seeing as Vlad is dead and we ousted the mass murderer.

[dotcom]

Hm...

That's a good question, honestly.

[aubins]

A worrying one too.

Well, it'll depend on who pisses off who in trial.

[aubins]

It will, and this is why I wonder why Greed has any faith in this trial system at all.

It might just be the lack of faith in us as people.

Oh. It's pretty deserved.

I'd say so. Until we get one right... yeah.

... let's try to get it right.

That would be preferable to... literally every other thing we've been doing.

People think that the number of weeks that pass is how many bodies there will be... but it's probably just a coincidence. So, hopefully there won't be that many next time.

[aubins]

... If we couldn't solve one murder, two, or three, I'm not sure how anyone expects us to get by with four bodies to distract us. I seriously hope it was just a coincidence.

Although the more I think of it, the more convinced I am Vlad was working with the person who killed him. Not that I can point to evidence... but as a gut feeling, I suppose.
